Magazine Evaluation - Activity 1

Magazine Evaluation - Activity 2

In summary- the main social group i am representing is the white rapper section, this is a small section of the rap community, but black males will also be interested- as they are covered in the magazine also.

It would appeal to white males as it is different to normal rap magazines, most other rap magazines only show black males, with the exception of Eminem- of course. My Magazine intends to break that convention by having a white male on the front.

What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why?

The media institution/ publisher that would suit my magazine the most would be Harris Publications
I would use this publisher as it is a known publisher for many rap magazines, such as XXL. Harris Publications Inc. is a consumer magazine publisher located in New York that publishes over 75 titles.

It is a small publishing company mainly based in america, but it has a few titles in Europe, it doesn't just cover the Rap/ Hip-Hop genre, it has a wide variety such as, horror, indie music etc.

Other Magazines that Harris publish are;

  • XXL

  • Antenna

  • Juicy

  • Rides

  • King

  • Combat Handguns

  • Special Weapons for Military & Police

  • Guns & Weapons for Law Enforcement

  • Tactical Knives

  • The role of a publisherA publisher is responsible for all aspects of acquiring, preparing and managing a book, magazine, or newspaper as it is edited and printed for sale.

The reason why Harris would publish my magazine is to do with my USP (Unique selling Point) my USP is that my magazine is the first Rap Magazine to be published in the UK featuring both American stars and up and Coming British artists, to give them a chance to gain some sort of publicity. I think Harris would want to publish my magazine for this reason.

    Occupation: Part-time Bar worker
Ambition: Joe wants to become a self made millionaire, or maybe just take over his Fathers company
Musical Preference: Joe really likes Old School Hip/Hop, and he also likes a bit of Grime.
Like: Listening to his iPod, buys Vibe magazine every week without fail
    Dislike: Disrespect, Stereotypes
    Idol: Pharrel Williams

    Name: Alex Wilson
    Gender: Male
    Age: 16
Occupation: Ex-Garden Centre Operative, currently unemployed
Ambition: Alex would like to go to University to study Psychology, and pursue a career with this qualification
    Musical Preference: Rap, Hip-Hop, grime.
    Likes: Eminem, Ipod, Facebook, Football.
    Dislikes: Attention Seeking, Gimmicks, Immaturity
    Idol: Eminem

After looking at these two audience profiles i can get an overall view of what the audience i aimed for was. I aimed for both new school and old school rap fans, the music they listen to is Hip/Hop/Rap/R"n"B. It appeals to any fans of them genres. The stereotypical attributes of rap fans is that they are very street wise, wear baggy clothing etc.

These are the technologies i used when creating the magazine, and doing my research and planning.
To summarize, i learnt to use a lot of technologies and software during my time doing the coursework. Before starting my preliminary exercise i had no previous experience of using Photoshop. But now i feel i can confidently perform a given task. I learn to use all the various aspects of Photoshop such as cropping, cutting, recoloring, editing images etc. Other useful aspects where the use of Scribd to upload word documents, before this i knew nothing regarding putting a word processed document on blogger.

To conclude- this project has helped further my knowledge on both the use of technology in media, and the publication of magazines. Technology also helped me with research, without the available technology (google) i would not have been able to find out important information regarding other magazines.

    Unique Selling Point

I think the unique selling point for my magazine would be the Genre. In Britain, the Rap/ Hip-Hop genre isn't covered extensively in magazines, this could be because rap isn't as widely promoted and listened to as it is in America.

I am mostly going to be focussing on American Artists, but I will try and include some British.

    Inspirations

I like this magazine example because of the way his shirt matches the crisp white background and i am thinking of adding this into my own piece. I also like the way that the title of the Magazine contrasts with the background and matches with the main article, the artist name is also in bold letters which is also a convention i may be using on my own cover.
The conventions from this magazine that I may be using in my own is the big red fonts and the dark background, i also like the photo of the artist because the pose is very striking, the colour scheme for this cover is mostly Red, White and Dark, and this could be the scheme I use.
I like the way the White smoke contrasts on the Black background, also his black beard has the effect that it is melting into the background, the Title of the magazine is also relevent because it could be where i am going to place my title

    Evaluation on Pitch Feedback.

From the comments that where made on my 25 word pitch, the point that kept coming up was the fact that the Hip/Hop genre does not get much Magazine cover in the UK, and by me creating a Hip/Hop magazine i shall be breaking this, and bringing something unique to the market. Although their is big coverage regarding the Hip/Hop market in the USA i think that it is lacking in England, so that should be the audience i aim for. This could mean that I have to add other features that will appeal to an English audience, for example the use of English artists as well as the main American Artists.

Another point that was made was on the name, a few people really liked the name as it relates to the genre of the magazine, and hence- will appeal to the audience I am looking to reach.

    Mood Board

I researched a few rap magazines, and used their images in my mood board. The other images are pictures that relate back to the Rap/Hip-Hop genre, and have given me ideas of the sort of front cover I can design.

    Name Decision

As my magazine is going to be based around the Hip-Hop/Rap genre, I thought that the name should relate back to that in some way. I did some research and came up with a list of possible names. I then Narrowed the list down using the opinion of other people, and the font i had chosen and found the the name that suited the most was "Hustla"

Hustla is a good choice because it relates back to the rap genre, so it appeals to the audience I am aiming to sell too, it is also a good choice, because- according to my research there is no other magazines operating under the name "Hustla" so it makes my magazine unique.

Below is the original list of names:
    C.R.E.A.M
    Hype
    Beatz
    Word
    Hustler
    Chronic
    Phresh
    Hustla

    Looking at fonts..

I asked some of my peers, and my teacher which font they would recommend and the top right hand font received the most positive feedback, so this is the font I shall try first.
